The stories and interviews that follow come from a research project carried out in two primary schools in East London, where the majority of children are of Bangladeshi heritage. Though most have been born and bred in London, their families usually maintain strong links with villages in Sylhet, Bangladesh, travelling there for visits as often as they can; most children have visited their 'desh' (homeland) several times. While they strongly identify with London as 'home', many of the children see Bangladesh as a second or different kind of home. As we'll see, their lives in London contrast strongly with their experiences of Bangladesh. As for the journeys involved in getting there…
